Rental policies and requirements
Everything that governs a rental with Cheap Car Rentals, written the way we would explain it on the phone. If anything here is unclear, call +1 (815) 991-4848 and ask before you book.
Driver requirements
Every driver must present a valid, unexpired driver's licence held for at least 12 months. Digital licences are accepted only where the state issuing them supports offline verification; bring the physical card if you can.
Visitors from outside the United States may rent on a home-country licence in the Latin alphabet together with a passport. If the licence is in another script, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. We do not require an IDP for licences issued in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia or the EU.
The minimum age is 21 for economy, compact, midsize, standard SUV, pickup and van classes, and 25 for luxury, performance and convertible classes. Renters aged 21 to 24 pay a young-driver surcharge that is quoted on the call and shown on the agreement; it is charged per day and capped at ten days.
Additional drivers must be present at pickup with their own licence. A spouse or domestic partner is added free of charge; other additional drivers are a flat daily fee.
Payment and security deposit
A credit or debit card in the primary renter's name is required at pickup. Prepaid cards, gift cards and cash cannot be used for the deposit, though cash is accepted for the balance on return.
The refundable security hold is $200 for economy through standard classes and $500 for luxury, performance and convertible classes. The hold is an authorisation, not a charge; it is released within three to five business days of return, though your bank may take longer to display it.
Debit card holders should expect the funds to leave the available balance for the duration of the rental. If that is a problem, tell us on the call and we will explain the lower-hold options for the class you want.
Insurance and protection
State-minimum liability coverage is included on every rental at no cost. It protects other people and property, not the rental vehicle itself.
Collision damage protection is optional. It reduces your responsibility for damage to the rental car to a fixed deductible, or to zero on the full-coverage tier. If you decline it, you are responsible for the full cost of repair plus loss-of-use for the days the car is off the road.
Many personal auto policies and credit cards already cover rental cars in the United States. Credit card coverage is usually secondary, meaning it pays after your own policy. Check before you decline ours, and bring proof of your policy to pickup if you intend to rely on it.
Supplemental liability, personal accident and personal effects coverage are available separately and can be added or removed at pickup without changing the base rate.
Fuel, mileage and vehicle use
Cars are supplied with a full tank and should be returned full. If returned short, we charge the pump price for the missing fuel plus a flat refuelling fee, both disclosed on the agreement. There is no prepaid fuel upsell.
Mileage is unlimited on every rental with no geographic restriction inside the lower 48 states. Travel into Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico or off paved roads is not permitted.
Vehicles may not be used for rideshare or delivery platforms, driver training, towing, racing or any commercial haulage, and may not be sublet. Smoking and vaping in the vehicle incur a cleaning fee.
Pets are welcome when transported in a carrier or on a seat cover. Excess pet hair is billed at the standard deep-clean rate.
Tolls, tickets and citations
Most of our vehicles carry a transponder. You may either use your own account by registering the plate, or use ours for a flat daily convenience fee that is only charged on days a toll is actually incurred.
Parking tickets, red-light camera notices and moving violations remain the renter's responsibility. If an authority bills us, we forward the citation to you and add a single administrative fee for processing.
Pickup, return and late returns
Airport pickups are curbside meet and greet; we text the exact meeting point and the driver's name the evening before. Downtown hotel delivery is free in most cities we serve.
There is a 59-minute grace period on returns. Beyond that, hourly charges apply up to the cost of one extra day, after which a full day is billed. Call us before you are late; extensions arranged by phone are charged at your original daily rate.
Early returns are refunded pro rata for whole unused days, provided the rental still meets any minimum-duration rate you were quoted.
Changes and cancellations
Reservation holds are free. Change or cancel by phone up to 24 hours before pickup at no cost and with no fee of any kind.
Inside 24 hours we will still move your dates whenever the fleet allows; we only decline when the specific vehicle has been prepared and blocked for you and cannot be re-let.
No-shows without a call release the vehicle after two hours. Nothing is charged, but the rate you were quoted may no longer be available.
Accidents and breakdowns
In any collision, call emergency services first and then call us on the number on your agreement. Do not arrange repairs yourself; we dispatch and manage the repair.
Roadside assistance is included on every rental for lockouts, jump starts, flat tyres, fuel delivery and towing. Where a replacement vehicle is needed, we aim to have one with you within four hours in the metro areas we serve.
Accessibility and equipment
Hand controls, spinner knobs and transfer boards are available free of charge with 48 hours' notice. Child and booster seats are available in every city; we install them at handover if you would like us to.
Ski racks, bike racks and roof boxes are available seasonally in mountain and coastal markets. Ask on the call and we will confirm availability for your dates.
